Opening of the new Cumbria RSS Facilities
Gyrodata Drilling Automation Ltd (GDA) opened its new research, development and manufacturing facility on Park Road, Barrow in Furness in NW England on 9 June 2009. Gyrodata, the parent company, is an international oil service company based in Houston, Texas operating in 60 countries with over 650 employees.

GDA designs and develops Rotary Steerable Drilling Systems (RSS) used primarily in the oil and gas industry. The RSS is an automated drilling tool which guides the oil well path along a pre-programmed trajectory using its on-board, down hole intelligence to navigate to a preset location.

Relocating from the original rural workshops in Greenodd there are currently 30 people employed at the new location, with growth planned in the near future.

Peter Allen, who co-founded the firm and was the creator of this technology, opened the ceremony with the Deputy Mayor for Barrow in Furness Borough, Councillor Rory McClure cutting the ribbon. Harry Knowles from Furness Enterprise who along with the North West Development Agency, helped GDA with the growth planning and funding assistance, welcomed Gyrodata to this growing area. Steve Klopp, Chairman of Gyrodata, thanked everyone for their help and recognised the skill base in Barrow, Cumbria essential to the growth of this company.

Harry Knowles, Chief Executive of enterprise agency Furness Enterprise said:
"Over the past three years, we have faced the challenge of persuading Gyrodata to base its new eastern hemisphere research, development and manufacturing operation here. Today everyone can support this success."

He added,
"Furness will now become a European centre for the manufacture of rotary steerable drilling equipment securing and creating local jobs. We hope to build on this development by using it to seek further investment from North America and to reinforce the area's role as a "Gateway to Britain's Energy Coast" and centre for advanced systems integration."
