During Houston wildfires, Gyrodata provides food for local firefighters

(Houston, Texas) As the Greater Houston Area was hit by wildfires threatening local neighborhoods, Gyrodata on Friday the 9th of September provided firefighters in the area with some great home made barbeque. A copious amount of barbeque was cooked up and delivered to those helping to combat and put out the fires and those protecting the areas affected from further threat.

Since early September, the fires have threathened neighborhoods in the Montgomery, Grimes and Waller counties to the north west of Houston. 19,000 acres and at least 60 homes have so far gone up in flames, with residents in the area being told to be extra careful in the days to come. All Gyrodata employees offer their heartfelt sympathies to those that have lost their homes and extend a huge 'Thank You!' to the men and women actively working to contain the fires.

Gyrodata introduces new high inclination Gyro-While-Drilling tool

(Houston, Texas) Gyrodata is proud to introduce the commercial availability of its new Gyro-Guide GWD70™ system. The system is the company's latest addition to its highly acclaimed Gyro-Guide Gyro-While-Drilling suite of tools. Launched at the 2011 SPE/IADC Drilling Conference and Exhibition held during the first week of March in Amsterdam this year, GWD70™ represents a major step forward in accurate and reliable wellbore placement and drilling safety.

The system, which is either collar or probe based, allows for real-time surveys up to 70 degrees of inclination from vertical while drilling. The GWD70™ system incorporates the new MXY rate-gyroscope, designed and developed in-house at Gyrodata's sensor facility in California, USA. The MXY is the first gyroscope designed and optimized specifically to meet the rigorous challenges of the oil field environment, and it is this new gyroscope that allows the GWD70™ to provide such durable, reliable and highly accurate readings whilst incorporated in the drilling BHA, including many RSS applications.

When the GWD70™ gyroscopic sensor is combined with the new CAP™ data processing firmware and a magnetic sensor, the client receives reliable wellbore placement with a second check providing data redundancy; thus detecting gross errors. In addition, through a new communications link, the system can now be instructed to run a memory multishot while tripping out of the hole all the way back to surface, providing verification of both the MWD and GWD performance and confirmation of the wellbore location prior to setting casing.

"Field trial performance has repeatedly proven the GWD70™ to far exceed our most optimistic expectations. Utilizing this new technology, operators are assured of having the most accurate survey results available to them in real time." said Keith Beattie, Global Product Champion, Gyro-Guide GWD. "The new GWD70™ is a viable solution for faster, safer and more accurate real-time well bore placement, with all the advantages of gross error detection when run in conjunction with magnetic MWD sensors."

Field tests undertaken in North America and the North Sea have shown the tool to be more than ready for use by the industry. During these field tests, the GWD70™ performed admirably under the harshest of conditions, providing the client with the accurate gyroscopic positioning information required.

About Gyrodata
Gyrodata has headquarters in Houston, Texas and engineering and manufacturing facilities in Houston and Westlake, California in the United States; and in Aberdeen, Barrow-in-Furness, and Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The company develops and deploys premium wellbore surveying and guidance systems and rotary steerable drilling services - with a central focus on providing safe drilling operations and increased recovery of oil and gas reserves through highly accurate wellbore placement.

Gyrodata aids in Chilean miner's rescue

(Houston, Texas) After being trapped underground for over 67 days, all the Chilean miners have finally been rescued by way of a specially designed rescue capsule that was lowered down a drilled shaft. Several shafts which connected the miners with the surface were surveyed with CAAT™ technology to deliver the fastest, safest and most accurate downhole coordinates, available to date. Surveyor X-4™ technology was selected to provide gyroscopic guidance of the drilling assembly of the Plan C rescue effort. Employees from all over the world, including Argentina, Norway, and the US, were involved in this project, pro bono.

Gyrodata Announces New SQ³ Quality Assurance Initiative

(Houston, Texas) Gyrodata Incorporated, a worldwide leader in high-technology wellbore placement services for the energy industry, today announced the introduction of the SQ³ Quality Assurance Initiative - an internal certification program designed to take quality management to the next level.

"Gyrodata is all about quality, and this is an important initiative for both the company and our customers," said Stephen Klopp, Gyrodata's Chairman and CEO. "SQ³ integrates every control aspect of the quality objective, from design and engineering to manufacturing and field deployment, so that all employees understand their link in the service quality chain. SQ³ has been initiated worldwide to all districts and employees, and we expect to soon see the bar raised for a new standard of excellence in the industry."

The SQ³ initiative is both an informational program and a certification process for the company's field operations. When a completed survey report is approved and stamped with the SQ³ Seal, both Gyrodata employees and its customers will be informed of the technology and the exact processes and procedures applied to assure a high level of performance. SQ³ provides Gyrodata's customers with the confidence to make critical wellbore placement decisions safely and accurately.

The SQ³ program highlights three main aspects of Gyrodata's services relevant to quality assurance:

System Quality - Precision engineered gyroscopic systems, designed and manufactured in-house for the harsh wellbore environment, lay the groundwork for field accuracy and reliability.

Survey Quality - Data accuracy through standardized calibration and modeling procedures.

Service Quality - Controlled processes and procedures required for SQ³ certification from service call-out to return-to-base.

SQ³ documentation goes beyond the issue of Gyrodata's quality of service by providing additional useful information. As a resource, SQ³ points customers to industry-recognized survey performance models for safe and effective well planning; and it discusses the latest industry perspective on survey accuracy with references and links to studies and technical papers.
Gyrodata's New CAAT Surveyor X-4™ Achieves the Highest Level of Accuracy

(Houston, Texas) Gyrodata Incorporated, a worldwide leader in high-technology wellbore placement services for the energy industry, today announced the introduction of the new CAAT SURVEYOR X-4™ (Continuous All-Attitude Tool). The inertial guidance-based CAAT™ system provides three-dimensional trajectory profiles for oil and gas wells by surveying while transiting the wellbore, rather than stopping at periodic intervals to take readings.

The CAAT™ system has evolved from Gyrodata's new X-4™ technology, which incorporates advancements in downhole sensors, electronics, software modeling and mechanisms to increase resistance to shock and vibration - leading to significant gains in performance, speed, accuracy and reliability. Along with these advancements, the CAAT™ system has taken continuous surveying a step further with all-attitude capability (i.e., the system can survey a well while moving at high speeds from vertical to horizontal). Previous systems had to reach a certain angle of inclination before starting in continuous mode.

The CAAT™ system has successfully performed 12 commercial jobs to date, two of which surveyed to horizontal in the active Marcellus Shale Field in the Appalachian Basin. All-attitude surveying and increased ruggedness have led to faster surveying times for significant rig-time savings.

Gyrodata's continuous surveying provides the most accurate means of wellbore trajectory definition, due to the quality of the inertial guidance-based data and the ability to profile the well in much smaller increments than with other methods. Now, combining continuous all-attitude capability with advanced X-4 technology, the CAAT™ system has become the most accurate tool in Gyrodata's fleet of instrumentation.

High-accuracy continuous surveying provides numerous benefits over the entire life cycle of an oil and gas development: reduced risk of costly and dangerous wellbore collisions, optimum wellbore placement and reservoir delineation for increased recovery, and reduced well maintenance and workover costs.

Once Gyrodata performs a continuous survey, a client has the ability (now or at any time in the future) to examine the well profile at any incremental resolution down to 0.1 of a foot. Typical oil industry surveying employs 100-foot intervals. The high data density of continuous surveying allows identification of micro doglegs and other structural problems that could adversely affect a maintenance program over the life of a well. Many operators have used continuous data to optimize the placement of downhole pumps and rod guides in artificial lift operations for significant reductions in tubing wear, equipment failures and overall workover frequency.
Our main focus during this show was presenting and re-acquainting potential clients with our Rotary Steerable Drilling Systems (RSS). The RSS is a closed-loop, automated drilling tool which guides the oil well path along a pre-programmed trajectory using its on-board, down hole intelligence to navigate to a preset location.

Sharing a booth with our strategic partner in Mexico, Integradora de Perforaciones y Servicios (IPS), we were able to talk to many interested parties about the services we can deliver, such as our singleshot and multishot gyroscopic surveys, our Geo-Guide GWD (Gyro-While-Drilling), wireline services, the importance of extensive risk mitigation and of course our RSS tool.
Probably the highlight of the show was the unplanned stop of the Governor of Tabasco, Mr. Andrés Granier Melo, and the Exploration and Production Director General for PEMEX, Mr. Carlos Gil. After a short introduction and an explanation of the the RSS tool, both were interested in and impressed with the RSS tool we had on display.

All in all, we had a successful and fruitful week. Our thanks to IPS, who graciously offered us space at this years show. We hope to see you there next year!

Gyrodata's New Surveyor X4™ Service Sets a New Standard of Performance and Reliability

(Houston, Texas) Gyrodata Incorporated, a worldwide leader in high technology wellbore placement services for the energy industry, today announced the introduction of its new SURVEYOR X4™ service. Based on the high accuracy gyroscopic technology for which Gyrodata is known, the Surveyor X4™ sets a new industry standard of performance for directional survey instrumentation.

SURVEYOR X4™ technology incorporates advancements in downhole sensors, electronics, software modeling and mechanisms to increase resistance to shock and vibration - leading to significant gains in performance, speed, accuracy and reliability.

Central to the development are an enhanced rate-gyroscopic sensor and a fourth generation of downhole electronics. The sensor is a ruggedized version of a state-of-the-art inertial guidance sensor, designed and built in-house specifically for the harsh wellbore environment. Combined with additional shock isolation from a proprietary mechanism - the sensor array now provides an increase in shock resistance of an order of magnitude.

The new single-chassis downhole electronics module, which measures half the size of its predecessor, is also more rugged and reliable with faster and more powerful data processing. Together, the isolated sensor and new electronics provide a significant reduction in the noise-to-signal ratio which, in turn, provides greater accuracy in survey measurement. Performance accuracy has also improved due to the ability to maintain a tight laboratory calibration throughout an operation under vibratory conditions, and new software performance modeling further adds to data quality. The need for fewer full calibrations and maintenance at major repair centers is also improving operational logistics, especially in remote areas.

Overall, the Surveyor X4™ brings its higher level of performance and reliability to a number of important survey applications: it performs high accuracy trajectory surveys to ensure against dangerous and costly wellbore collisions and to position wells on target in reservoirs for optimum production and recovery. The system is also utilized to orient drilling assemblies and other downhole tools, and it can be incorporated in a logging string to survey a well and provide orientation information for logging instrumentation. Whether operating on electric wireline or by battery power, Surveyor X4 can withstand the high shock and vibration of high-speed downhole surveying and drilling operations.

Gyrodata is headquartered in Houston, Texas and has engineering and manufacturing facilities in Houston and Westlake, California in the United States; and in Aberdeen, Cumbria, and Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
Gyrodata announces first milestone in the evolution of new wellbore guidance technology

(Houston, Texas) Gyrodata Incorporated, a worldwide leader in high precision wellbore placement services, today announced the first milestone in a multi-year effort to develop a new range of wellbore guidance technology designed specifically for the harsh conditions encountered in the oil and gas industry.

Less than two years after opening its new navigation design center in Westlake, California, the company has successfully deployed an enhanced guidance sensor offering an approximate ten-fold increase in shock capacity, with an overall performance enhancement of thirty percent. Extensive laboratory tests and field trials confirm the new ruggedized sensor's superior ability to maintain calibration and precision measurement in the high-shock downhole environment.

The new sensor is just the start of a major investment in the evolution of Gyrodata's gyroscopic guidance technology, which is utilized in the energy industry to survey and guide wells for placement in hydrocarbon reservoirs. The increasing complexity in the challenge to find and produce hydrocarbons has brought about the need for a new level of guidance system performance and reliability. Maximizing reservoir recovery from increasingly deeper and smaller horizons brings the accuracy of wellbore placement technology to the forefront of the challenges facing the industry.

Gyrodata is meeting that challenge by taking total control of guidance system design instead of relying on systems built mostly for aerospace applications. Gyrodata's new design team in Westlake, California, has extensive experience in the development of state-of-the-art inertial guidance systems. The Westlake facility houses a clean room with an array of calibration and testing equipment for the manufacture and repair of inertial sensors. Now that the team has channeled their expertise for the challenging wellbore environment, several more important developments are underway. In fact, the new enhanced sensor is integral to a broader whole-system development to be detailed in an upcoming news release.

Gyrodata is headquartered in Houston, Texas and has engineering and manufacturing facilities in Houston, Aberdeen and Cumbria, United Kingdom, and now, in Westlake, California. The company develops and deploys wellbore surveying and guidance systems and rotary steerable drilling services for high precision wellbore placement, plus additional applications in orientation and logging - all with a central focus on increasing the recovery of oil and gas reserves through technical innovation and precision.
