In Q1, the OmegaX Helped an Operator Avoid a 36-Hour Round Trip by Providing Surveys Missed by a Failed MWD

In January 2019 in the Utica Shale, Gyrodata’s new solid-state drop gyro surveying system, OmegaX ™ successfully provided missing surveys caused by failed MWD for a horizontal well with a total depth of 25,634 feet.

A major operator had used conventional MWD surveys combined with in-field referencing bottom hole assembly sag and multi-station analysis corrections to drill the well. The MWD tool intermittently failed to provide surveys over the last 4,000 feet of the wellbore.

OmegaX ended up saving the operator a 36-hour round trip and significantly improved the wellbore’s ellipse of uncertainty by 151 percent. The new gyro surveying system also accurately corrected the bottomhole location by 210 feet and identified a 0.92 declination error. As a result of these findings, it was determined that there was more drillable space for future wells than previously expected.

About the OmegaX

After years of research, Gyrodata developed the OmegaX, which is powered by innovative SPEARTM technology. The OmegaX only takes 32 seconds to measure the earth’s rotational and gravity fields. Additionally, its new solid-state sensors ensure unmatched accuracy in harsh downhole conditions.
